Carbohydrates
The word carbohydrates literally mean hydrated carbon. They are composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen and the ratio of hydrogen and oxygen is the same as in water i.e 2:1 There general formula is C^n (H^2O)^n where 'n' is that the number from 3 to several thousand.
Chemically, carbohydrates are defined (definition) as polyhydroxy aldehydes or ketones, or complex substance, which on the hydrolysis yield polyhydroxy aldehyde or ketone subunits.
Sources of
Carbohydrates
The source of carbohydrates is green plants. These are the primary products of photosynthesis. Other compounds of plants are produced from carbohydrates by various chemical reactions.
Classification of Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are called 'saccharides' derived from the Greek word 'sakcharon' meaning sugar. They are Classified into three groups
1. Monosaccharides
2. Oligosaccharides
3. Polysaccharides
